Prelude:

Lord, I lift your name on high; Lord, I love to sing your praises

I’m so glad you’re in my life, I’m so glad you came to save us

You came from heaven to earth to show the way,

from the earth to the cross my debt to pay,

from the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky:

Lord, I lift your name on high

R Founds/1989/Maranatha Praise

Call to Worship:

We say together …

We gather together as the church of God,

called to be God’s holy people,

belonging to God in union with Christ Jesus,

united with God’s people everywhere,

assembled to worship our Lord Jesus Christ.

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

grant us his grace and peace [1 Corinthians 1:2 – 3]

PRAISE:

Praise we offer, Lord of glory, for your coming to our earth;

called to be the child of Mary, taking manhood by your birth: praise we offer, Lord of glory for your coming to our earth

Praise we offer, Lord of glory, for your passion and your death; called to suffer for us sinners, faithful till your final breath:

praise we offer, Lord of glory for your passion and your death

Praise we offer, Lord of glory, for your conquest of the grave;

called to break the chains which bound us, rising, faithful souls to save: praise we offer, Lord of glory for your conquest of the grave

Praise we offer, Lord of glory, for your Spirit’s touch of power;

called to give our lives new radiance, filling us from hour to hour; praise we offer, Lord of glory for your Spirit’s touch of power

Praise we offer, Lord of glory, for the hope which all our days,

called to being by your labours, turns our thought to endless praise: praise we offer, Lord of glory – endless songs of joyful praise!

Prayer & Lord’s Prayer

Welcome & Intimations:

First Address:

PRAISE:

God is our strength and refuge, our present help in trouble;

and we therefore will not fear, though the earth should change!

Though mountains shake and tremble, though swirling floods are raging,

God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

There is a flowing river within God’s holy city

God is in the midst of her – she shall not be moved!

God’s help is swiftly given, thrones vanish in his presence –

God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

Come see the works of our Maker, learn of his deeds all-powerful;

wars will cease across the world when he shatters the spear!

Be still and know your Creator, uplift him in the nations –

God the Lord of hosts is with us evermore!

From Ps 46; R Bewes/Jubilate Hymns

Reading: John 8:31 – 36

Prayer:

Reading: Romans 7:14 – 8:4

PRAISE:

Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways:

reclothe us in our rightful mind, in purer lives your service find;

in deeper reverence, praise, in deeper reverence, praise

In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea,

the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, obey his word:

“Rise up and follow me, rise up and follow me!”

O sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above,

when Jesus shared on bended knee the silence of eternity

interpreted by love, interpreted by love!

With that deep hush subduing all our words and works that drown

the tender whisper of your call, as noiseless let your blessing fall

as fell your manna down, as fell your manna down

Drop your still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease;

take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess

the beauty of your peace, the beauty of your peace

Breathe through the heats of our desire your coolness and your balm;

let sense be dumb, let flesh retire, speak through the earthquake, wind and fire,

O still small voice of calm, O still small voice of calm!

J G Whittier/d1892/Jubilate

Second Address:

Prayer:

PRAISE:

And can it be that I should gain

an interest in my Saviour’s blood?

Died he for me, who caused his pain;

for me, who him to death pursued?

Amazing love! How can it be

that you, my God, should die for me?

What mystery here! The immortal dies,

who can explore his strange design?

In vain the first-born seraph tries

to sound the depths of love divine!

Such mercy this! Let earth adore;

let angel minds enquire no more

He left his Father’s throne above,

so free, so infinite his grace,

emptied himself of all but love,

and bled for Adam’s helpless race

What mercy this, immense and free,

for O my God it found out me

Long my imprisoned spirit lay

fast bound in sin and nature’s night

Your sunrise turned that night to day;

I woke, the dungeon flamed with light

My chains fell off, your voice I knew;

I rose, went out and followed you

No condemnation now I dread;

Jesus, and all in him, is mine!

Alive in him, my living head,

and clothed in righteousness divine,

bold I approach the eternal throne

and claim the crown through Christ my own

C Wesley/d1788/Jubilate

Blessing:

May God’s blessing surround you each day

as you trust him and walk in his way

May his presence within guard and keep you from sin

Go in peace, go in joy, go in love

C Barrows
