HYMN Who you say I am

Who am I that the highest King

Would welcome me

I was lost but He brought me in

Oh His love for me

Oh His love for me

Who the Son sets free

Oh is free indeed

I’m a child of God

Yes I am

Free at last

He has ransomed me

His grace runs deep

While I was a slave to sin

Jesus died for me

Yes He died for me

Who the Son sets free

Oh is free indeed

I’m a child of God

Yes I am

In my Father’s house

There’s a place for me

I’m a child of God

Yes I am

I am chosen

Not forsaken

I am who You say I am

You are for me

Not against me

I am who You say I am

READING Matthew 16: 13-20

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

Video – Who do you say I am

The crunch has come – the time for the truth – how will the disciples fare when Jesus puts the ultimate question to them? Will they waver, or will they demonstrate that they are true believers, or will they show that they are just like everyone else?

Jesus puts that question to them WHO DO PEOPLE SAY THAT I AM? And then the crunch; WHAT ABOUT YOU? Who do YOU say I am?

How would the disciples respond to that ? Well, lets look through our Bibles and see how other people thought of Jesus ?

Matthew 26:63

63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, ‘I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.’

Matthew 27:54

54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, ‘Surely he was the Son of God!’

Mark 14:61

61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, ”Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”

Acts 9:20 Paul

20 At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.

And so we see that this same question was being asked by the Roman authorities and by the Jewish religious authorities – clearly this is the question of the moment – it WAS in 30 AD and it still is the ultimate and most important question even today! WHAT ABOUT YOU? WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF JESUS?

Different people, from different backgrounds have all come to the same conclusion about Jesus – take the African government official:

Acts 8:37

37 Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may….’ The eunuch answered, ”I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

John 1:49

49 Then Nathanael declared, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.’

Matthew 14:33 Fishermen

33 Then those who were in the boat worshipped him saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.’

John 11:27 Martha

27 ‘Yes, Lord,11 she told him, ”I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

John 6:69 The disciples come up with the right answer: 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.’

Now, we might be wondering why this is such a vital question – many would say WHO CARES ABOUT JESUS? Well I hope none of you would think THAT – but it is important that every one of you be able to answer that question for yourselves. The whole New Testament has been written so that you can answer that question WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?

John 20:31

31 But these are written that you may [continue to] believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

And the Bible makes very plain just why Jesus is no ordinary mortal. He is very special – listen to that wonderful passage in Hebrews as it describes the majesty of Jesus :

Hebrews 1:2

but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

4. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father’? Or again, ‘I will be his Father, and he will be my Son?

And how may we be absolutely certain that Jesus is all He is cracked up to be – we must have certain proof and evidence before we are going to commit ourselves to any human being -especially one who dies so long ago …. well, the answer lies just in that last thought – Jesus has died BUT:

Romans 1:4

4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God, by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 John 5:20

20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true – even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

We can be absolutely certain in our hearts that Jesus is God’s Son, when He comes to live in our hearts. We can be sure that he is true – when we come to know Him Who is the Truth!

But there are a couple of practical reasons why this question is so important for every one of us this evening – and with these I want to close.

Firstly, there is a negative reason. 1 John 5:5

5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

Secondly , there is a very positive reason.

1 John 4:15

15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God.

I can’t believe that there is anyone watching this evening who would not give everything they possess to have that certain knowledge that God was living in them – THAT CERTAIN KNOWLEDGE IS POSSIBLE – when we answer that question for ourselves – WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF JESUS ?

Hymn All I once held dear

1 All I once held dear,

Built my life upon,

All this world reveres,

And wars to own,

All I once thought gain

I have counted loss;

Spent and worthless now,

Compared to this.

Knowing You, Jesus,

knowing You,

there is no greater thing.

You’re my all, You’re the best,

You’re my joy, my righteousness,

and I love You, Lord.

2 Now my heart’s desire

Is to know You more,

To be found in You

And known as Yours.

To possess by faith

What I could not earn,

All-surpassing gift

Of righteousness.

3 Oh, to know the power

Of Your risen life,

And to know You in

Your sufferings.

To become like You

In Your death, my Lord,

So with You to live

And never die.
