HYMN With Jesus in the boat

With Jesus in the boat

we can smile at the storm,

smile through the storm,

smile through the storm.

With Jesus in the boat

we can smile through the storm,

as we go sailing home.

Sailing, sailing home,

sailing, sailing home.

With Jesus in the boat

we can smile through the storm,

as we go sailing home.

READING – Matthew 14:22-36

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

SERMON – Jesus Walks on the Water – Jesus : Lord & Saviour

We often speak of Jesus as Lord and Saviour – Jesus is both IN CONTROL and He also CARES !

Jesus In Control – Control of People

In verse 22 He does two things – He sends the disciples on ahead of Him – and they get into the boat and go.

He also sends the crowd away and they go!

Jesus was going to teach them a lesson later that night as they struggled through a storm at sea. Jesus actually sent them into the storm – and we should also be aware that Jesus can do this for us. ALWAYS with the intention that we will seek and find His help.

Jesus also told the crowd to go away.

Jesus is in control of all the people He has made – He is in control of your life. Does that terrify you, or give you real peace.

Control of Nature

The elements are in His hands – health is His to dispense.

In Verse 25 we see Jesus walking on the lake. He controlled the seas.

Notice, verse 29 , that He also encouraged Peter to walk on the water – He wanted to share His power with His people. Peter would have been given power to if only he had kept his eyes fixed firmly on Jesus.

Hebrews 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith. Have you taken your eyes off Him – are you beginning to go under.

After this they got into the boat – and the wind died down – and the disciples worshipped Jesus as the Son of God. Jesus accepted this honour.

Are you at all moved to worship God as you see Him at work all around you?

We also see Jesus control over natural things as He heals all who come to Him on the other side of the lake.

Jesus in control – how wonderful to know that – but we need to know that He is also a God who cares for us.

JESUS CARES

What moved Jesus was LOVE and CARE for people.

He walked on the water towards them because He cared about them. When the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water – they imagined He was a ghost and they were terrified. Are YOU scared at the approach of Jesus? And as Peter steps out in faith, and begins to go under – what does Jesus do? Jesus reached out and grabbed Peter from the choppy waters. Do you fear you may not be able to stand up in the waters of the Christian life?

Conclusion

Here the disciples had learned that Jesus was always with them. That great man had power over everyone and everything, yet He took time for each of them and would save them from all that might harm them.

That same all powerful – Jesus, the Caring Saviour, is still the same today – He comes to YOU this evening, on the waves. He calls to you by name – will you hear His voice and take heart – accept His invitation – accept His salvation – step out of your boat and into His arms?

PRAYER

Hymn I was sinking deep in sin

1 I was sinking deep in sin,

sinking to rise no more,

overwhelm’d by guilt within,

mercy I did implore.

Then the Master of the sea

heard my despairing cry,

Christ my Saviour lifted me,

now safe am I.

Love lifted me!

Love lifted me!

When no one but Christ could help,

love lifted me!

Love lifted me!

Love lifted me!

When no one but Christ could help,

love lifted me!

2 Souls in danger, look above,

Jesus completely saves;

he will lift you by his love

out of the angry waves.

He’s the Master of the sea,

billows his will obey;

he your Saviour wants to be,

be saved today.

Refrain

3 When the waves of sorrow roll,

when I am in distress,

Jesus takes my hand in his,

ever he loves to bless.

He will every fear dispel,

satisfy every need;

all who heed his loving call,

find rest indeed.

Refrain
