HYMN        Jesus loves me (Chris Tomlin)

1     I was lost, I was in chains,

the world had a hold of me.

My heart was a stone, I was covered in shame

       when He came for me.

I couldn’t run, couldn’t run from His presence.

I couldn’t run, couldn’t run from His arms.

       Jesus, He loves me,

He loves me, He is for me!

       Jesus, how can it be?

He loves me, He is for me!

2     It was a fire deep in my soul.

       I’ll never be the same.

I stepped out of the dark and into the light

       when He called my name.

I couldn’t run, couldn’t run from His presence.

I couldn’t run, couldn’t run from His arms.

       Refrain

He holds the stars, and He holds my heart

with healing hands that bear the scars.

The rugged cross where He died for me,

       my only hope, my everything!

       Refrain

READING    MATTHEW   11:20-30

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[a] For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

The Father Revealed in the Son

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

SERMON – Jesus’ Word of Woe

Did you ever watch that awful programme  Up Pompeii? I remember the old soothsayer who appeared each week saying   woe, woe and thrice woe.  And our first verses today are Jesus’ message of WOE. Jesus has demonstrated in great power, in certain towns, that He is the very Son of God – but still the residents of those towns rejected Him. And Jesus says very plainly to them and to all who reject Him : Woe to you on the Day of Judgment.

Maybe you’ve been hearing the challenge of Almighty God in these last days or months. Maybe you’ve been weighing up the pros and cons of committing your life to Christ.   NOW is the right moment – you might never have another – come to Christ this very day – don’t delay!

A Message for the Simple

Jesus then goes on in verses 25-27 to thank His Father that the Gospel is a message for the simple. Some people listen to the Gospel being preached and they say: Oh, that’s too easy. Getting to heaven simply CANNOT be as easy as believing in Jesus and living for Him. But, if the message of salvation was a complicated thing, then some people would NEVER pass their exams to get into heaven.

And the marvelous truth is that Jesus loves to reveal Himself to little children. Are YOU ready for God’s Way?

Come For Comfort

But Jesus doesn’t end on this note. He offers a challenge in these last 3 verses, but it comes with one of the most wonderful passages of comfort in the whole Bible. Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened. [Are you feeling weary with life, burdened with all sorts of cares this morning? Come to Jesus.] and I will give you rest. [people are searching everywhere for this rest …]    Take my yoke upon you and learn from me[are you ready to sit at the feet of the Master and LEARN from Jesus ?]  for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. [What other teacher can offer you that? REST FOR YOUR SOULS? Oh, think seriously before rejecting THAT.] For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

There may never be a better opportunity for you to give your life to Jesus – indeed you may NEVER HAVE another opportunity to come to Him for life abundant and life eternal. Don’t wait till you’re a BETTER person. Don’t wait till you’re OLDER and needier. Don’t wait for a more convenient time. Come to Him, Come NOW to Him with a believing heart. JUST AS YOU ARE – just WHERE you are – just WHO you are – COME to Jesus – the LAMB of God.

PRAYER

Hymn      Come Thou Fount (I Will Sing) Chris Tomlin

Come Thou fount of every blessing

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace

Streams of mercy never ceasing

Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet

Sung by flaming tongues above

Praise the mount I’m fixed upon it

Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise my Ebenezer

Hither by Thy help I come

And I hope by Thy good pleasure

Safely to arrive at home

Jesus sought me when a stranger

Wandering from the fold of God

He to rescue me from danger

Interposed His precious blood

How Your kindness yet pursues me

How Your mercy never fails me

Till the day that death shall loose me

I will sing, oh I will sing

Turnaround

Oh to grace how great a debtor

Daily I’m constrained to be

Let Thy goodness like a fetter

Bind my wandering heart to Thee

Prone to wander, Lord I feel it

Prone to leave the God I love

Here’s my heart Lord, take and seal it

Seal it for Thy courts above

How Your kindness yet pursues me

How Your mercy never fails me

Till the day that death shall loose me

I will sing, oh I will sing

How Your kindness yet pursues me

How Your mercy never fails me

Till the day that death shall loose me

I will sing, oh I will sing

Till the day that death shall loose me

I will sing, oh I will sing

Prone to wander, Lord I feel it

Prone to leave the God I love

Here’s my heart Lord, take and seal it

Seal it for Thy courts above

Here’s my heart Lord, take and seal it

Seal it for Thy courts above

Benediction
