WELCOME

HYMN Our eyes have seen the wondrous cross (Graham Kendrick)

1  Our eyes have seen the wondrous cross that towers over time,

vast as the ocean grace and love, amazing so divine.

Oh, this is our story, and this our hymn of praise.

Through all generations the song remains the same.

To the One who has loved us,

 loved us and freed us,

 to you belongs the praise,

 through everlasting days we’ll sing.

To the One who is worthy

 of honour and glory,

 to you belongs the praise,

to you belongs the hymn of the ages.

2  The King of love our Shepherd is, our shelter from the storm;

a mighty fortress is his name, and our eternal home.

To God be the glory, how great the things he’s done.

And with all generations, we join the joyful song.

 Refrain

A thousand tongues are not enough, but we don’t sing alone.

Oh, how the heav’nly anthem drowns all music but it’s own.

A thousand tongues are not enough, but we don’t sing alone.

Oh, how the heav’nly anthem drowns all music but it’s own.

To you belongs the hymn of the ages. (Exploding through the ages.)

To the Hymn of the ages. (Ev’ry generation singing.)

Is singing the hymn of the ages.

PRAYER

READING MATTHEW 9:35-38

35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

SERMON – Missionary Work

  1. vs 35 Tells us HOW JESUS did missionary work
  2. vs 36 Tells us WHY JESUS did it.
  3. vs 37 Tells us WHY CHRISTIANS must reach out.
  4. vs 38 Tells us HOW CHRISTIANS are to do it.
  1. HOW JESUS Drew others into the Kingdom (vs.35)

A) TEACHING in the synagogues was a PRIORITY.

Matthew 4:23 – Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

Look again at our verse 35 – Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom

B) PREACHING – the Good News of the Kingdom (here is a word not just to ministers – we can ALL share Good News)

C) HEALING – every disease and sickness – very PRACTICAL.

2) WHY JESUS Reached out to the crowds (vs 36)

Perhaps we should notice FIRST that it was to the CROWDS that Jesus ministered here. Last week we saw some folks laughing at Jesus and accusing Him of being in league with the Devil (v.34).

But now we see His REAL MOTIVATION – COMPASSION. He had compassion on the crowds because they were harassed and helpless; like sheep without a shepherd.

3) WHY CHRISTIANS must reach out (vs. 37)

And that brought Jesus to His 3rd point – namely: WHY CHRISTIANS also have to reach out to the world. If we have the heart of Jesus and His Compassion and Love, we will have eyes to see the great need of shepherdless sheep – and we will see the great Harvest Field that lies before us.

4) HOW CHRISTIANS are to reach out (vs 38)

When we see the NEED and the POTENTIAL – then our duty is clear – we need to PRAY to the Lord of the harvest to Send Out Labourers. We need to Pray believing; pray expectantly; and pray in such a way that we will be prepared to become The Answer to our prayers.

HYMN New wine (Hillsong)

VERSE 1:
In the crushing
In the pressing
You are making new wine
In the soil I now surrender
You are breaking new ground

PRE-CHORUS:
So I yield to You and to Your careful hand
When I trust You I don’t need to understand

CHORUS:
Make me Your vessel
Make me an offering
Make me whatever You want me to be
I came here with nothing
But all You have given me
Jesus bring new wine out of me

VERSE 2:
In the crushing
In the pressing

You are making new wine
In the soil I now surrender
You are breaking new ground

VERSE TAG:
You are breaking new ground

BRIDGE:
Where there is new wine
There is new power
There is new freedom
The Kingdom is here
I lay down my old flames
To carry Your new fire today

Benediction
