HYMN How can it be (Christ is risen) Getty

1 How can it be, the One who died

has born our sin through sacrifice,

to conquer ev’ry sting of death?

Sing, sing ‘hallelujah!’

2 For joy awakes as dawning light

when Christ’s disciples lift their eyes.

Alive he stands, their Friend and King:

Christ, Christ he is risen!

Christ is risen, he is risen indeed!

Oh, sing ‘hallelujah!’

Join the chorus, sing with the redeemed:

Christ is risen, he’s risen indeed.

3 Where doubt and darkness once had been,

they saw him and their hearts believed;

but blessed are those who have not seen

yet sing ‘hallelujah!’

4 Once bound by fear, now bold in faith,

they preached the truth and pow’r of grace

and pouring out their lives they gained

life, life everlasting.

5 The pow’r that raised him from the grave

now works in us to pow’rf’lly save;

he frees our hearts to love his grace

go, tell of his goodness.

Christ is risen, he is risen indeed!

Oh, sing ‘Hallelujah!’

Join the chorus, sing with the redeemed:

Christ is risen, he’s risen indeed.

He’s alive, he’s alive,

heaven’s gates are opened wide.

He’s alive, he’s alive

now in heaven glorified.

He’s alive, he’s alive,

heaven’s gates are opened wide.

He’s alive, he’s alive

now in heaven glorified.

14 Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.

16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

SERMON – The Kingdom – Fast or Feast

Last week we were looking at Jesus going to a party -and Jesus went to loads of parties. BUT not EVERYONE was HAPPY about Jesus attending parties !!

There were the disciples of John the Baptist and they didn’t go to parties – NO – they did the opposite – they had days when they didn’t eat ANYTHING AT ALL. We call that fasting !

And these men came up to the Lord Jesus and said -WHY DO YOU FEAST AND NOT FAST ?

The FIRST THING Jesus says is that NOW IS THE TIME TO BE JOYFUL. This was a unique time in the history of the world – GOD had come to earth in the person of JESUS. Surely this called for great rejoicing and happiness. It was like when the bridegroom arrived at the wedding feast – that was no time for long faces.

When Jesus burst into the world – a new way of living burst into the world. When JESUS became a man – God’s plan was NOW IN ACTION – NOTHING would ever be the same again.

The old way had fallen into disrepute – the old style Jews relied on the OUTWARD RELIGION – and they HATED Jesus for introducing what seemed to them a NEW RELIGION – the religion of the heart.

BUT, my friends, we must ask ourselves THIS question : WHAT USE IS OUTWARD RELIGION IF IT IS NOT MOTIVATED BY OUR HEARTS.

Basically the disciples of John and the Pharisees didn’t understand the NEW THING that Jesus was doing.

Such Church folks say: “The Baptists are wrong – the Catholics are heretics, the Brethren are foolish, the Pentecostals are way out“.

And then they come on to their OWN denomination : “St Michael’s are wrong because they do communion wrong; Fullarton are wrong because they allow modern singing; Liberton are wrong because they don’t use guitars at all etc.”.

BUT – a proper understanding of the coming of JESUS simply cuts through all sorts of old notions about religion -ARE YOU PREPARED TO LET GO of your OLD ideas about God and listen to what the Living Son of God will tell you ?

Jesus came to bring JOY. No room for sadness when you’re at a wedding banquet. The presence of Jesus in your life brings deep JOY – YOU CAN EXPERIENCE THIS NEW LIFE.

Jesus says (Rev 21:5) I am making everything new. (HAS HE done this for YOU).

Paul: 2Cor. 5:17 If anyone is in Christ he is a NEW CREATION – the old has gone, the NEW has come“. (ARE YOU IN CHRIST?).

Rom. 7:6 “We serve in the NEW WAY of the SPIRIT and not in the old way of the written code” (ARE YOU LIVING IN THE NEW WAY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ?).

Eph. 4:23,24 “You were taught to be MADE NEW in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the NEW SELF“.

HYMN My worth is not in what I own

1 My worth is not in what I own,

not in the strength of flesh and bone,

but in the costly wounds of love at the cross.

2 My worth is not in skill or name,

in win or lose, in pride or shame,

but in the blood of Christ that flowed at the cross.

I rejoice in my Redeemer,

greatest treasure, well-spring of my soul.

I will trust in him, no other,

my soul is satisfied in him alone.

3 As summer flow’rs we fade and die,

fame, youth and beauty hurry by,

but life eternal calls to us at the cross.

4 I will not boast in wealth or might,

or human wisdom’s fleeting light,

but I will boast in knowing Christ at the cross.

5 Two wonders here that I confess:

my worth and my unworthiness.

My value fixed – my ransom paid

at the cross.
