HYMN 152 Eternal Father, strong to save
1 Eternal Father, strong to save,
whose arm doth bind the restless wave,
who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
its own appointed limits keep:
O hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.

2 O Saviour whose almighty word
the winds and waves submissive heard,
who walkedst on the foaming deep,
and calm amid its rage didst sleep:
O hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.

3 O sacred Spirit, who didst brood
upon the chaos dark and rude,
and bid its angry tumult cease,
and give, for wild confusion, peace
O hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.

4 O Trinity of love and power,
sustain us all in danger’s hour;
through wreck and tempest, grief and loss,
renew the triumph of the Cross:
and ever let there rise to thee
glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

Jesus Calms the Storm
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men
28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”
30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.

SERMON The Calming power of the Kingdom
Vs 23 – Jesus led the way into the boat – into the storm!
Vs 24 Without warning, a furious squall came up.

Jesus may appear to be absent from your life when you need Him most – but COULD He desert you in your hour of need?

Where were the disciples? In a boat. Alone? NO – in a boat with Jesus. Remember vs 23 they FOLLOWED Him into the boat. No safer place on earth than with Jesus.

Jesus shouts at the WAVES!

At THAT, the disciples were amazed and said:
What kind of man is THIS? Even the winds and waves obey Him!

These men had listened to Jesus’ teaching & were intrigued.

They saw the miraculous healings and were impressed.

But NOW .. out at sea .. their domain .. they knew the sea .. suddenly they realised Jesus was more powerful than the mighty waves – & they were AMAZED.

Sometimes we need to see God at work in something familiar to US before WE will be AMAZED.

We hear the minister talking of someone who has become a Christian and we are interested.

We hear on the TV that a famous footballer has become a Christian and we are impressed.

BUT – if our BEST FRIEND or CLOSEST NEIGHBOUR were to become a Christian THEN we would be amazed.

Are YOU waiting to be amazed?

Jesus calms the troubled sea – lands the boat and calms TWO TROUBLED HEARTS. Just as the powers of nature have to obey Jesus, so do the powers of evil.

How have YOU RESPONDED to what you’ve heard of Jesus and seen of Him?

You can SEND HIM AWAY and He will go.
Or you can FALL AT HIS FEET in worship and amazement.

HYMN 608 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation;
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation;
all ye who hear,
brothers and sisters draw near,
praise him in glad adoration.

2 Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee;
ponder anew
what the Almighty can do,
if with his love he befriend thee.

3 Praise to the Lord, who, when tempests their warfare are waging,
who, when the elements madly around thee are raging,
biddeth them cease,
turneth their fury to peace,
whirlwinds and waters assuaging.

4 Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the Amen
sound from his people again:
gladly for aye we adore him.
