Sunday, 21st June 6.00pm Thanksgiving Order of Service

WELCOME

HYMNThere’s no greater Name than Jesus

1There’s no greater name than Jesus,

name of him who came to save us;

in that saving name so gracious

every knee shall bow.

2Let everything that’s beneath the ground,

let everything in the world around,

let everything exalted on high

bow at Jesus’ name!

3In our minds, by faith professing,

in our hearts, by inward blessing,

on our tongues, by words confessing,

Jesus Christ is Lord.

PRAYER of Thanksgiving

READINGMATTHEW 8:18-22 (KEITH ABELL)

18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

SERMON – What does it cost to be a follower of JESUS?

People approach Jesus on this particular day – one a religious man – the other, a follower of Jesus. How do these two people respond to the Saviour?

The first man was actually a teacher of the Law. Jesus spelled out very clearly to this man that following Him would be very costly indeed.

We are not told so, but I suspect that the teacher of the law went away with his head low, just like the rich young ruler that Jesus loved and sent away.

Well, what about the second chap? He had what appears to be a very simple request. “I’ll follow you, but first let me go and bury my father.

Jesus commands all people everywhere to repent, and the time is NOW, and NOTHING must come in the way of our following Him.

PRAYER

HYMNHave Thine own way, Lord

1Have Thine own way, Lord,

Have Thine own way;

Thou art the Potter,

I am the clay.

Mould me and make me

After Thy will,

While I am waiting,

Yielded and still.

2Have Thine own way, Lord,

Have Thine own way;

Search me and try me,

Master, today.

Whiter than snow, Lord,

Wash me just now,

As in Thy presence

Humbly I bow.

3Have Thine own way, Lord,

Have Thine own way;

Wounded and weary,

Help me, I pray.

Power, all power,

Surely is Thine;

Touch me and heal me,

Saviour divine.

4Have Thine own way, Lord,

Have Thine own way;

Hold o’er my being

Absolute sway.

Fill with Thy Spirit

Till all shall see

Christ only, always,Living in me.
