HYMN 3474How firm a foundation

1How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,

is laid for your faith in his excellent word;

what more can he say than to you he hath said,

you who unto Jesus for refuge have fled?

2Fear not, he is with thee, O be not dismayed;

for he is thy God, and will still give thee aid:

He’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,

upheld by his righteous, omnipotent hand.

3In every condition, in sickness, in health,

in poverty’s vale, or abounding in wealth;

at home and abroad, on the land, on the sea,

as thy days may demand shall thy strength ever be.

4When through the deep waters he calls thee to go,

the rivers of grief shall not thee overflow;

for he will be with thee in trouble to bless,

and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

5When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,

his grace all-sufficient shall be thy supply;

the flame shall not hurt thee, his only design

thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.

6The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose

he will not, he will not, desert to its foes;

that soul, though all hell should endeavour to shake,

I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.

True and false prophets

15 ‘Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

16 By their fruit you will recognise them. Do people pick grapes from thorn-bushes, or figs from thistles?

17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognise them.

True and false disciples

21 ‘Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?”

23 Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!”

The wise and foolish builders

24 ‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.’

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,

29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

WHO ARE the REAL Children of God ?

HOW can we tell if we have entered Jesus’ narrow gate and are walking on His narrow road ?

Jesus says, very simply, that there will be fruit in your life!

You cannot SEE the WIND – but you see the effects of it. SO IT IS with God’s Holy Spirit – He cannot live IN US and remain HIDDEN! He shows himself through His fruit!

Jesus is trying to say, as forcefully as He can , that we cannot be NEUTRAL towards Him – we are either WITH HIM or we are AGAINST HIM. We are either Children of the LIGHT or we are children of darkness.

There is a right and a wrong RESPONSE to God’s Word. Jesus deals with two of the WRONG RESPONSES to God’s Word.

1) vv 21-23 : Some people offer Jesus a MERELY VERBAL profession of faith. But it must be MORE than just words – there must be a real – a moral change in our lives.

2) vv 24 – 27 But Jesus warns of ANOTHER danger – and that is only KNOWING ABOUT God in an intellectual way – withoutactually KNOWING GOD ! We’ve heard it all ; we’ve read the Bible – we know it all and accept that it is true BUT WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?

Here are 2 men building houses – they look very similar. These are two men coming to Church and they look very alike in terms of their Christian faith – but although they may LOOK ALIKE – just let the storms of life come and THEN the foundations of your life become OBVIOUS ! Is your faith REAL or COUNTERFEIT ?

Jesus issues each of us with a challenge tonight – & it is THIS: LEAVE YOUR OWN KINGDOM – where you are the king of your own castle.

Join that Kingdom where Christ is INDEED Lord – and ruler in your life. It is a radical choice – we are called to LEAVE DARKNESS and to BECOME LIGHT. Build your house – your life – on the rock – on JESUS – there is no other sure foundation.

HYMN3704.My hope is built on nothing less

1My hope is built on nothing less

than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust my sweetest frame,

but wholly lean on Jesus’ Name.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

all other ground is sinking sand.

2When darkness seems to veil his face,

I rest on his unchanging grace;

in every high and stormy gale,

my anchor holds within the veil.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

all other ground is sinking sand.

3His oath, his covenant, and blood,

support me in the whelming flood;

when all around my soul gives way,

he then is all my hope and stay.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

all other ground is sinking sand.

4When the last trumpet’s voice shall sound

O may I then in him be found,

robed in his righteousness alone,

faultless to stand before the throne.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

all other ground is sinking sand.
