HYMN– Praise 780 Behold the amazing gift of love (Paraphrase 63 – based on 1 John 3:1-4)

1

Behold the amazing gift of love

the Father has bestowed

on us, the sinful sons of men,

to call us sons of God!

2

Concealed as yet this honour lies,

by this dark world unknown,

a world that knew not, when he came,

ev’n God’s eternal Son.

3

High is the rank we now possess;

but higher we shall rise;

though what we shall herafter be

is hid from mortal eyes:

4

Our souls, we know, when he appears,

shall bear his image bright;

for all his glory, full disclosed,

shall open to our sight.

5

A hope so great and so divine

may trials well endure;

and purify us all from sin,

as Christ himself is pure.

PRAYER

READINGMATTHEW 7: 1-6

7 ‘Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way as you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

3 ‘Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, “Let me take the speck out of your eye,” when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

6 ‘Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

SERMON – Judging

I’m inviting you, today, to look at yourself as you’ve never done so before. God’s Word searches into all the nooks and crannies of our lives .

HOW DO YOU LOOK AT OTHERS?

Some folks are quick to see the failings of others – even another’s BEST deeds are despised – wrong motives.

FIRSTLY He says DO NOT JUDGE OR YOU TOO WILL BE JUDGED! Judging is God’s job – and whenever we take God’s job/seat …

Mercy and NOT REVENGE should be our motive always. Jesus is NOT saying that we should never discriminate between human beings – Heb 13:13 encourages us to “Exhort one another DAILY” – so we must be wise and discriminating.

This ‘judge not’ refers to a HABIT of harmful criticism.

Jesus doesn’t want us to be BLIND – but rather to be GENEROUS !!

However, in Verse 6 Jesus specifically says that we MUST show DISCRIMINATION – at LEAST in one respect – that of preaching the Gospel.

Even God’s patience has LIMITS

We must not ignore blatant sin or treat it as good – we must use our God-given common sense – but MOST OF ALL we need to be motivated by GOD’s LOVE in ALL OUR DEALINGS with others.

PRAYER

HYMN – JP 29 Come let us sing of a wonderful love

1

Come let us sing of a wonderful love,

tender and true;

out of the heart of the Father above,

streaming to me and to you:

wonderful love

dwells in the heart of the Father above.

2

Jesus, the Saviour, this gospel to tell,

joyfully came;

came with the helpless and hopeless to dwell,

sharing their sorrow and shame;

seeking the lost,

saving, redeeming at measureless cost.

3

Jesus is seeking the wanderers yet;

why do they roam?

Love only waits to forgive and forget;

Home! weary wanderers, home!

Wonderful love

dwells in the heart of the Father above.

4

Come to my heart, O Thou wonderful love,

come and abide,

lifting my life till it rises above

envy and falsehood and pride;

seeking to be

lowly and humble, a learner of Thee.
