WELCOME

HYMN Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire

1

Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire,

Uttered or unexpressed,

The motion of a hidden fire

That trembles in the breast.

2

Prayer is the burden of a sigh,

The falling of a tear,

The upward glancing of an eye

When none but God is near.

3

Prayer is the simplest form of speech

That infant lips can try;

Prayer the sublimest strains that reach

The majesty on high.

4

Prayer is the contrite sinner’s voice

Returning from his ways,

While angels in their songs rejoice,

And cry: ‘Behold, he prays!’

5

Prayer is the Christian’s vital breath,

The Christian’s native air,

Our watchword at the gates of death;

We enter heaven with prayer.

6

Prayer is not made by us alone:

the Holy Spirit pleads,

and Jesus, on the eternal throne,

for sinners intercedes.

7

O thou by whom we come to God,

The Life, the Truth, the Way!

The path of prayer thyself hast trod:

Lord, teach us how to pray!

PRAYER

READINGMATTHEW 6: 5-18 Prayer

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,

10

your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

11

Give us today our daily bread.

12

And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Fasting

16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

SERMONSpeaking to the King

The Word for us this evening is DON’T SHOW OFF IN PRAYER.

Jesus went on to say When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray

PRIVATE PRAYER

Firstly it involves EXCLUSION

Secondly – we must REALISE that we are in HIS presence.

Thirdly we should come with CONFIDENCE to make our requests known to Him.

The word Jesus uses is a word for a store-room – where the treasures were often kept – and the implication is clear -prayer brings us into the treasure house of God – He has so much to give us if we will but ask !!

However… OURFather implies to me that there must be MORE than ONE person praying in the one place.

And, of course, from the earliest days of the Christian Church (Ac 2:42) they devoted themselves to (amongst other things) PRAYER – CORPORATE PRAYER.

Jesus is saying of the hypocrites DON’T COPY THEIR MOTIVES! They pray and fast to be seen.

Secondly Jesus says don’t copy the PATTERN of the Pagans. The Pagan religions were renowned for their endless and meaningless prayers

THE PATTERN taught in the Lord’s Prayer is simple – it starts off OUR FATHER. If we asked the question WHAT IS PRAYER?, we would surely all say that it is SPEAKING TO GOD/JESUS (The King). But it is MORE – it’s speaking to our FATHER (if we are Christians anyway !).

But if God is our Father – then he is in heaven & ought to be HONOURED and PRAISED. That’s a good starting place. Then there is ‘confession of sin (12 cf 14,15) – and often a sorrowful heart would fast – both then and even today (fasting and prayer going together regularly). And FINALLY, SEEKING GOD’S HELP/daily food/guidance/strength for yourself & others .
